He acts as if she spoke to a lot of people that didn’t involve bartering prices, but then she supposed he hardly understood the magnitude of her living conditions. While she offered herself, he could have easily assumed it was just to keep herself out of trouble for stealing, and she figured it would be better that way. Aimee felt sadness in her heart, however, that this young man was so adamant about never finding happiness again. “Non, monsieur, there eez no place for a lady in a library.” Mostly because it was true that she couldn’t read. The extent of her literacy was enough to read prices and warning signs, but after that she had no such ability for leisurely reading. The fact he actually assumed she could read was a sentiment she appreciated, of course.

When she was questioned, Aimee looked briefly looked away, unsure how to answer. She understood societal norms and expectancies here in this country, but she knew not how to apply them to herself nor did she really want to. Bringing up society’s expectations was more of a trick, a means to pretend she was educated and well-mannered. Since she had nothing to say, she just nodded, keeping her gaze low. As she followed him, Aimee was stopped in her whimsical tracks to be reminded that she shouldn’t refuse a host if the offer is kind and harmless. “Ah… oui, Monsieur! Excusez-moi…” Starting to walk again, she moved quickly to stay right behind her host, expecting he would lead her to the baths since she hadn’t ventured that far into the manor to find it herself. Toward his confession that even he knew not why he wanted to help her, she only smiled, finding this a sign there was still some hope within him albeit buried deep beneath his depression.

“Eet eez very odd, Monsieur!” she chimed. While it was very strange, she was grateful for his kindness. “Merci… Your gesture eez… eet eez an act I will cherish.”

The young man merely cocked his brow, initially, as this comment that Aimee - as a lady — had no place in the library. He assumed that thought process was due to years of being surrounded by sexist individuals who pounded that mentality into her, similar to how nobles may have thought Leo had no place in libraries and higher institutions given his poor upbringing. “As long as you do not annoy me or interrupt my reading there will always be a place for you in any library I inhabit. I take it, then, you have not been instructed how to read?” The idea of someone missing out on the wondrous stories books had to offer was one that was appalling. At the same time, for a lady, many families believed that a proper woman was one who was well versed in household chores and pass times. “Depending on how long your stay is, we should fix this.

Leo remained quiet as he escorted his guest off to the bathroom, merely nodding in respond to her apology. He stopped outside of the decadent bathroom, filled with porcelain, expensive soaps and cotton towels. The Duke then turned his head to look to the red-haired lady as she chimed her thanks to him. “You need not thank me. All I can say is … do not feel the need to take anymore from me. You will be fed and housed here but you must also know your place.”

“Charlotte will bring you one of her dresses while you bathe. When you are finished join me in the dining hall.” briefly, his amethyst eyes met her pale blue ones. Leo’s eyes, having once been filled with liveliness, were cold and ‘dead’ — one could say — even in the face of his chipper guest. “Enjoy yourself.” the raven-haired one walked off down the hall to head to the dining hall and continue his reading and give the young woman her privacy.
